  • 2. On call. I'm a 63-year-old man with arthritis but no other conditions. My only medicines were Naprosyn and vitamins until my last annual checkup, when my cholesterol was high. My doctor gave me Zocor, which helped. But I developed muscle aches, so he switched me to Zetia. I feel fine again, but I'd like to know what you think.

  • 5. Ask the doctor. I am a 78-year-old woman and have been taking high blood pressure medications for many years. Maybe it s because I've lost a lot of weight I used to be quite heavy but my blood pressure has fallen to about 110/70 mm Hg. My doctor tells me that the lower my blood pressure, the better. But I worry that it's getting too low. What do you think?

  • 9. Ask the doctor. I have had heart failure since my heart attack a year ago. My physician initially prescribed lisinopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Unfortunately, I was one of the unlucky people who got a cough with this drug that was so annoying I had to stop taking it. Now my doctor wants me to try a newer drug called valsartan. Is it likely to help me?

  • 10. Ask the doctor: I just got a new pair of soft contact lenses. They are very comfortable, and my ophthalmologist told me I can keep them in for a week. I'd like to wear them all the time, but I'm not sure it's safe. What do you think?

  • 11. By the way, doctor. I'm one year into menopause and really bothered by hot flashes and vaginal dryness. I'd like to take hormone replacement therapy, but I'm worried about increasing my risk of getting breast cancer. My doctor said I can take HRT at a dose longer than what's usually prescribed. What do you think?

  • 16. Ask the Doctor. I'm 45 years old. At the doctor's office, my blood pressure readings are usually pretty high (the top number may reach 150 or 160), but my home monitor shows numbers more like 130/90. My doctor calls my problem "white-coat hypertension" and reassures me that it isn't dangerous. But it bothers me that my pressure shoots up like that. I have plenty of stressful moments every day, and my blood pressure must be going up then, too. Should I be on medication?

  • 17. On call. I reread your articles on congestive heart failure when I was diagnosed with the condition last month. My breathing is back to normal, and I feel well. My doctor has prescribed all the medications you recommended, but he disagreed with one. He said that since I'm taking Vasotec, I should stop my aspirin. Do you agree?

  • 20. Ask the doctor. My blood pressure has wide swings each day. It can go as high as 210/110 with even minor stress like grocery shopping, then fall to 100/50, which makes me tired and needing rest. I take 15 mg of isosorbide dinitrate and a slow-release nitrate for angina. I also take 10 mg of atenolol (Tenormin) to slow my heart rate. My doctor says I'm just a "reactive person." My diet is excellent, and I try to keep active. Could my adrenal glands have anything to do with this?
